The ancient name of Skryne was Achaill or Aichill. After the introduction of Christianity an abbey was founded here and in 875 AD the shrine of St Colmcille containing his relics were deposited for security in the monastery of Achaill.
The foundation stone of the Church of St. Colmcille was laid by Fr. Berry in 1827. The Church was completed five years later.
In 1986 renovation work to Skryne Church commenced. A decision was made to preserve the existing building instead of building a new church. Further renovations were carried out on the Church in 2007.
